Mvuvi
Blessed May Day. Mvuvi, the Swahili word for Spring, a time of renewal and growth, is upon us.
Mvuvi is. Its essence offers hope. As all of us know, there’s nothing more needed now. For me,
the promise of hope is sustaining and fortifying. It, alone, is inadequate. Hope requires action.
Together, they generate change. As the purveyor of wisdom Mahatma Ghandi observed, we must
“be the change that we want to see in the world.” Collectively and individually, we must act to
bring needed change.
Sister-to-Sister, Inc. represents a funnel for change. As such, we work tirelessly to acquire
partners and allies that share similar missions, particularly advancing equity for Black women
and girls and, in turn, their families and communities. Community extends well beyond the
geographic area in which one lives. It is much broader, enveloping those outside. Visualize the
“Beloved community” of which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed. One of mutual support,
kindness, and selfless sharing. Dr. King understood that by kindly supporting one another. While
such a community may seem out of reach, it’s obtainable. We need only need to dream and act!
In sisterhood,
Velveta
