Pregnancy care should be a place where Black women feel heard, respected, and supported. Yet many Black women report that prenatal visits can feel rushed, confusing, or dismissive – especially when important questions and concerns need attention.
B-HEARD (Black Healthcare Empowerment through Activation, Readiness, and Decision-making) is a new pilot program led by Sister-to-Sister, Inc. and the University of Colorado, Boulder. Together, we are developing practical tools that help Black pregnant women and a trusted loved one, a "peer advocate", prepare for prenatal appointments, communicate concerns, ask questions, and make informed decisions.
B-HEARD recognizes that support matters. A partner, family member, or friend can help a woman remember key information, speak up when needed, and stay focused on what matters most to her health and her baby’s health. The program is being shaped by community feedback from Black women and prospective peer advocates so that it reflects real experiences, real needs, and real solutions.
B-HEARD invites Black women in the Denver metropolitan area who are pregnant, were pregnant within the past 12 months, or plan to become pregnant within the next 12 months – as well as "peer advocate" trusted supporters – to learn more and consider participating. Eligible participants may receive a stipend for their time.

Help shape a stronger future for Black maternal health... B-HEARD!

Why B-HEARD? The Numbers.
Black women are three times more likely than white women to die from a pregnancy-related cause: 50.3 vs. 14.5 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023 (CDC/NCHS). More than 80% of these deaths are preventable. Respectful, quality care and being heard can save lives.

Why a Peer Advocate?
A trusted loved one can help a pregnant woman remember information, ask questions, repeat concerns, and speak up when support is needed. B-HEARD gives peer advocates practical tools and the confidence to take part in important health-care conversations.
What Will You Do?
Participants review B-HEARD materials, join an individual conversation or complete a survey, and share what feels helpful, clear, respectful, and culturally relevant. Your lived experience helps shape the program, and you receive a stipend for your time.

Built with Community.
B-HEARD is a partnership between the University of Colorado Boulder (Academic Principal Investigator: Veronica Derricks, PhD) and Sister-to-Sister, Inc. (Community Principal Investigator: Velveta Golightly-Howell, Esq.), funded by the University of Colorado Anschutz. Community voices guide the program from design through feedback and sharing of findings.

Who Can Participate?
You may take part if you identify as Black or African American, are 18 or older, live in the Denver metro area, and are pregnant, were pregnant in the past 12 months, or plan to become pregnant in the next 12 months. Trusted adults such as partners, family, and friends who may serve as peer advocates are also invited, and eligible selected participants receive a stipend. Questions? Email info@sister-to-sister.org with “B-HEARD” in the subject line.
